Glenn McConnell Parkway > Planning Workshop
GLENN MCCONNELL PARKWAY
Charleston, SC
City of Charleston & SC Department of Transportation
WPi was commissioned to lead a series of community workshops and a multi-disciplined planning and design charette to examine alternatives for the next phase of the Glenn McConnell Parkway extension. The purpose of the workshop and design charette was to obtain local input regarding this important highway extension and to investigate alternative intersection designs for the Bees Ferry Road/Glenn McConnell Parkway intersection. In addition, the charette established better land use patterns for proposed adjacent commercial and residential development. Plans replaced the proposed clover leaf interchange with a new and innovative modified traffic circle sized to accommodate off-ramp and on-ramp traffic as well as commercial businesses and streets. Several new mixed use centers, including the "West Ashley Circle Village", West Bridge Village" and "Bees Landing Village" were created. Each village area integrated proposed buildings and road improvements, on-street parking, sidewalks and street trees to avoid typical suburban sprawl.
Client Quote:
n “We can create a new civic place West of the Ashley that allows people to drive, bike or walk and one that enhances the physical appearance of the neighborhoods. And there will be many other opportunities like this through our community.”
